The Birth of Super Tuscans: A Countercurrent Choice
In the 1970s, some Tuscan producers decided to break with the rules imposed by traditional denominations such as Chianti DOCG. Although they worked with excellent grapes and modern techniques, their wines could not be labeled as "quality wine" according to the regulations of the time.
From this challenge a new category was born: Super Tuscans , structured, elegant, international reds but with profoundly Tuscan roots.
What distinguishes a Super Tuscan?
Unlike DOCGs, Super Tuscans are Toscana IGT , but often use international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah, even pure.
They are characterized by:
- Long refinement in barriques , often French
- Low yield per hectare and manual selection of grapes
- Great aging capacity
- Broad organoleptic profile : spices, ripe fruits, tannic elegance
Why choose them?
Choosing a Super Tuscan means living a freer, bolder and more refined experience of Tuscan wine. They are ideal for important dinners, pairings with red meats, game or aged cheeses, but also for those who want to collect or give away bottles out of the ordinary.
The Villa Torrigiani proposal
Our Super Tuscan line is born from pure vines grown in the historic vineyards of San Martino (Cabernet) and Belvedere (Merlot), in addition to our Syrah Cortinova. Each wine is aged for over two years in barrique, large barrels and bottles. The result is a deep, elegant and authentic red.
